There’s probably a million reasons why it would have been great to coach former running back star Bo Jackson.

The two-sport athlete rushed for more than 4,300 yards and averaged 6.6 yards per carry during his college football career. He’s remembered as one of the greatest running back in SEC history.

But former Auburn coach Pat Dye explained to ESPN personality Paul Finebaum on Friday that what he loved best about coaching Jackson was his character.

“I’ve had the good fortune to coach some great human beings, and Bo Jackson is one of them,” Dye said on The Paul Finebaum Show.

“He gravitated towards the quality people here in the community. It wasn’t the richest, but the quality families, and the players on the team, that you know, might have had some spots on them, you never saw Bo hanging around with them. He was with the quality kids, and that’s the way he’s lived his life.”

Jackson won the Heisman Trophy as a senior in 1985. He went on to play four year in the NFL with the Oakland Raiders and starred with the Kansas City Royals in the MLB. Jackson also played for the Chicago White Sox and the then California Angels.

Here’s Dye’s full explanation of what he loved most about coaching Jackson:
