Matthew Downing spent his brief Georgia career as the 3rd string quarterback in 2018 behind Jake Fromm and Justin Fields on the depth chart. A rather bizarre set of circumstances at his new school, though, could put him in line for his first career start behind center against unbeaten and 11th-ranked Baylor.
TCU has had massive turnover at the quarterback position this season. Two players, true freshman Max Duggan and redshirt junior Mike Collins are injured; however, there’s a chance Duggan could play on Saturday. Redshirt freshman Justin Rogers entered the transfer portal last week, while another redshirt freshman quarterback, Matthew Baldwin, is currently under a medical redshirt, despite being eligible.
That leaves the possibility of Downing, an Atlanta-area native, coming off the scout team and starting for the Horned Frogs against the Bears. After walking on to the Georgia football program, Downing appeared in 4 games during his brief tenure with the Bulldogs, going 8-of-10 for 88 yards across those appearances.
In January, he announced he was transferring to TCU, where his brother is a graduate assistant.
TCU hosts Baylor on Saturday at noon Eastern time.
