Former LSU offensive lineman La’el Collins will begin the season on the injured reserve, according to an announcement from the Dallas Cowboys.

The Cowboys made the expected move on Sunday as he’s dealing with a hip injury. Collins is eligible to return to the active roster after he misses three games.

Collins is entering his sixth year in the NFL, started 15 games last season for the Cowboys. He has been a stalwart at right tackle for a few years as he also started 16 games each of the last two previous seasons.

The Fort-Worth Star Telegram reported that Collins is coming off the best season of his career as he was the team’s top offensive lineman in 2019, but he has been limited since the start of camp.

According to his agent Deryk Gilmore, Collins has been battling a hip injury, refuting reports of him coming to camp out of shape as the reason for him being idle.

Collins signed his second contract extension with Dallas a year ago that is reportedly worth $50 million over five years with $35 million guaranteed. He signed with the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent in 2015.

Collins was expected to be a high pick in the draft, but his name surfaced in a police investigation into the shooting death of a woman he reportedly knew in his hometown of Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Dallas opens the season on Sunday against the Rams in Los Angeles.
