Greg McElroy blasts Heisman Trophy voters for not having Bryce Young and Hendon Hooker as finalists

The Heisman Trophy finalists have been announced, which means that everyone is talking about it. The finalists are CJ Stroud, Caleb Williams, Stetson Bennett and Max Duggan. It also means that there are going to be many people who disagree with the list.

ESPN analyst Greg McElroy is one of those people. He feels that the Heisman voters are way too caught up in recency bias.

“Bryce Young was a get out of jail free card for Alabama all year,” he said on Tuesday’s episode of “The Paul Finebaum Show.” “It’s absurd that Hendon Hooker isn’t going to NYC as a finalist. Too many voters are caught up in with the flavor of the week.”
McElroy’s comments do have some validity, however. While Stroud and Williams have been in the discussion all year, Bennett and Duggan have been on the outside looking in. Both have had phenomenal years along with team success, but those who think like McElroy didn’t have them as serious contenders for the award.
Without a doubt, Hendon Hooker would have been a finalist if not for his injury, and possibly Bryce Young too if not for his injury earlier in the season. Hooker and Young have nearly identical numbers to Duggan and better numbers than Bennett in 2 fewer games.
Yes, winning should hold some weight, but when a quarterback like Hooker or Young are a main reason for their team’s success, that should hold some weight as well.
