The race for the Heisman Trophy has been filled with plenty of worthy candidates this season. Some standout players are going under the radar but that doesn’t diminish their accomplishments.

ESPN’s Greg McElroy and Desmond Howard on “College Football Live” each shared a dark horse favorite for the most coveted individual prize in the sport.

McElroy is going with North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye. The 6-foot-4, 220-pound freshman has passed for 2,964 yards, 31 touchdowns, and 3 interceptions for 8-1 North Carolina.

“I really believe this guy is not getting the attention he deserves. People are not paying attention to what North Carolina is doing … He hasn’t really had the platform to be able to showcase his ability…” McElroy said . “If Drake Maye is not in New York for the Heisman Trophy ceremony, something is really wrong with the award.”

Meanwhile, Howard is siding with Oregon quarterback Bo Nix. The 6-foot-2, 213-pound dual-threat senior has tallied 2,495 yards, 22 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions through the air, while rushing for 457 yards and 13 touchdowns.

“He’s been playing lights out ever since that Georgia game …” Howard said. “I’m just really blown away by his mastery of the offense, the way he controls the game. He’s playing at a flawless, high level right now.”

The winner of the Heisman Trophy will be announced Dec. 10 at 8 p.m. ET.
