Texas turned its season around with an impressive victory vs. rival Oklahoma last weekend as the Longhorns returned to the AP poll at No. 21. ESPN’s Greg McElroy believes Texas finally showed the requisite toughness needed to compete at an elite level.
During an edition of Always College Football, McElroy raved about Texas‘s tenacity vs. the Sooners.
“Texas just showed the grit that we’ve been waiting for,” McElroy said. “We always knew that if it became a track meet, if it was pretty, Texas can win games like that. They’ve always been able to win games like that…But if it becomes a churn and burn slugfest where you’re just throwing body blows to the opposition, is Texas willing to have that fight? Are they willing to win that fight? Are they willing to take the aggression to the opponent by delivering that physicality?”

McElroy thinks this is a new and improved Longhorns squad if they can maintain this disposition the rest of the season.
“To be honest with you, there’s been times in the last couple years where I’m like well alright Texas is taking a stride in that direction. Then they play against say Georgia and they get just gashed…This I think was a massive step in the right direction for them,” McElroy said. “I would imagine for Longhorn fans this is a cathartic win…That’s a good Oklahoma team that they beat and that’s a really good Oklahoma defense that they created several opportunities against.”
Next up for Texas is a road matchup at Kentucky on Saturday night (7 p.m. ET/ESPN).
