Count Gus Malzahn among the coaches who like the new redshirt rule instituted by the NCAA this season.
During Wednesday’s SEC Coaches’ Teleconference, Malzahn shared his thoughts on the rule, which will allow players to appear in four games and still use a redshirt for the season.
“I think it’s a positive thing, gives you flexibility,” Malzahn said. “Playing the young guys early to see what they can do.”
And the Auburn coach plans to take advantage of the rule this season.
“I think it will allow us to see where some guys are at, that’s a big benefit for most coaches around the country,” Malzahn said.
Malzahn also commented on junior cornerback Jamel Dean during the teleconference. Dean has been dealing with a hand injury during practice.
“He will be out there [Thursday] with no problem,” Malzahn said.
Dean is expected to play in the season opener against Washington. The Tigers and Huskies open the season on Saturday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta at 3:30 p.m. ET.
