Hunter Yurachek appeared on ESPN after the release of the final College Football Playoff Top 25 before Sunday’s Selection Day. One point of contention, specifically in South Florida, will revolve around Miami. The Hurricanes currently sit at No. 12 in the rankings, two spots below Notre Dame.

Not only do the teams have identical 10-2 records, but the Hurricanes defeated the Fighting Irish in the season opener. The Irish’s other loss has been to Texas A&M. The Canes have fallen to Louisville and SMU. Under current bracket projections, the Irish would make the 12-team field, but the Canes wouldn’t.

With neither team playing during conference championship weekend — Miami failed to qualify for the ACC championship and Notre Dame, well, is Notre Dame — Rece Davis asked Yurachek about the possibility of the Canes leapfrogging the Irish.

“Yes, teams that are idle can move up or down,” Yurachek said, noting that data points such as strength of schedule could come into play.

“So we’re not set with Miami definitively being behind Notre Dame no matter what. Is that fair to say?” Davis asked.

“Rece, following the championship games, we will re-rank the top 25 teams, and we’ll see where they fall,” Yurachek responded.

That sounds like a “yes” from the selection committee chair, albeit a very non-committal “yes.” As of now, Hurricanes fans will be hoping that the above scenario materializes.
