Javonnie Gibson reportedly suffered a serious leg injury during one of Oklahoma’s final spring practices last week.

On Saturday, Brent Venables confirmed the injury and said Gibson has already undergone surgery. It’s possible Gibson will be back in time for the start of the 2025 campaign, per Venables.

Gibson played the 2024 season at Arkansas-Pine Bluff before transferring to Oklahoma this past offseason. He was a significant pickup for the Sooners in the transfer portal and is projected to have a big role in the offense this fall if he’s healthy.

Gibson was a second-team FCS All-American last season, per the Associated Press. He recorded 70 receptions for 1,215 yards and 9 touchdowns. At 6-foot-2, Gibson is known for his speed and his ability to stretch the field vertically — something the Sooners were missing a year ago.

Oklahoma battled injury problems at the wide receiver position all last year. Deion Burks has returned, but the Sooners have a lot of new faces in that room for 2025. Isaiah Sategna and Keyontez Lewis are two other transfers who could play a big role in OU’s offense this fall.

Gibson appeared to be in good spirits at OU’s spring game on Saturday as he took some time to sign autographs for fans in attendance:
