Florida coach Jim McElwain hosted his weekly radio show Thursday night to talk about last week’s 14-9 win over Kentucky, the upcoming showdown with SEC East rival Tennessee and Florida’ offense, among other topics.

On the defense’s performance in last week’s 14-9 win over Kentucky:

“They had six or seven plays inside the 4-yard line and for (Kentucky) to only came up with three points, that’s something special.”

On Tennessee’s offense, defense and coaching:

“(Tennessee) was up 17-0…I’m sure they’re looking at that and just wondering how (they lost). Defensively, they just shut Oklahoma down. Oklahoma got some big luck plays, but never really got into a rhythm.”

Defensively this is a team that’s playing really well up front…Offensively, they’ve got a couple of racers at running back.

“Obviously, that quarterback (Dobbs), he’s a guy that triggers it all. He takes care of the ball…(Tennessee) is not turning it over and he’s not throwing it to the other team.”

“This is a team that has done a great job in the three years Butch (UT head coach Jones) has been there. They’re playing really disciplined football. They’ve got numbers on the d-line and they’re really staying fresh.”

On kicker Austin Hardin’s struggles with field goals in the last two games:

“Kickers are a different breed. We’ll see what happens this week. It’s an adventure, it’s like going to the circus. It’s something we’ve got to get handled – getting points down in the red area. We’re leaving a lot of points. Hopefully he’s only kicking extra points this weekend.”

On former coach Steve Spurrier, a central figure in the Florida-Tennessee rivalry:

“I can’t wait until retires because then I can go really pick his brain. He is a true Gator and loves this place – it means a lot to him…He’s a guy I look forward to learning from.”

On possible new uniforms:

“On Oct. 16 people from Nike headquarters are coming in to talk about some designs.”

On the GatorTail package on offense, which McElwain alluded to earlier this week:

“It’s something different with some different guys behind center. We only had two scholarship quarterbacks coming into this year, we knew we were thin.”

“You want me to go ahead and tell Tennessee what we’re going to do?”

More on Tennessee QB Joshua Dobbs:

“He’s a great quarterback. They do a lot of outstanding things on offense, as that’s Butch’s background. We’ve got our work cut out for us.”

On UF RB Jordan Scarlett, who was not used against Kentucky:

“Like any player, he’s got to show consistency throughout the week…Jordan’s a really good player. He’s going to play a lot of football and he’s going to play this week.”

Associate Director of Player Personnel Kevin Barbay on his desire to join McElwain’s staff:

“I told Coach Mac I’d do anything to work for him – I’d clean toilets or wash windows.”
