Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase have played together plenty before. Prior to becoming Cincinnati Bengals teammates, they were both at LSU. And not only that, but they had a ton of success with the Tigers.
So that’s why Burrow isn’t worried about Chase’s preseason struggles. The rookie wide receiver may have had some dropped passes that were causes for concern, but not for the second-year quarterback.
“I know what kind of guy Ja’Marr is and what kind of player he is. He will be ready to go Week 1,” Burrow told the media after the Bengals’ preseason finale against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday (h/t Sam Marsdale of 247Sports.com).
Burrow and Chase became LSU teammates in 2018, but they experienced the most success together with the Tigers in 2019. That’s when LSU went 15-0 and won the national championship.
That season, Burrow passed for 5,671 yards and 60 touchdowns, while Chase had 84 receptions for 1,780 yards and 20 touchdowns. Burrow got drafted No. 1 overall in 2020 by the Bengals, who then took Chase with the No. 5 overall pick in 2021.
The duo has the potential to lead Cincinnati to success in the future. But they each have a lot to prove heading into the season. Burrow is coming off a left ACL tear that ended his rookie season, while Chase has struggled this preseason.
The Bengals open the season with a home matchup against the Minnesota Vikings on Sept. 12 at 1 p.m. ET on FOX.
