Nick Fitzgerald may not have played during Mississippi State’s season opener, but the senior quarterback still made an impact while serving a one-game suspension.

Fitzgerald, who was out due to a violation of team rules, was on the scout team last week, as stated by Bulldogs coach Joe Moorhead during Wednesday’s SEC Coaches’ Teleconference.

Moorhead discussed how Fitzgerald helped Keytaon Thompson prepare to lead Mississippi State’s offense.

  • Nick was very mature this week, he handled it very well. We sent him down to scout team and he was an excellent resource for KT on the sidelines. … He was an excellent leader for the first game.

Here are some other topics that Moorhead discussed on the teleconference:

On why he thinks Fitzgerald will have a strong start:

  • Looking at his history at MSU, he’s about 500 yards from being the leading rusher in SEC QB history. … He’s an excellent fit for our system.

On his thoughts on his coaching staff after one game:

  • Offensively, much of us had already worked together. Lots of familiarity there, just a matter of getting a few guys getting up to speed there. The communication to the kids was good.

On if he sees himself coaching at 78, the age of Kansas State coach Bill Snyder, who he opposes this week:

  • I’m hoping I can get out of bed at 78.
