Six weeks through the season, No. 6 Oklahoma is right in the mix for a trip to the SEC Championship Game. Heading into Oklahoma’s matchup with rival Texas — the midpoint of the Sooners’ season — FOX Sports’ Joel Klatt believes OU holds the keys in the SEC.
During a recent episode of the Joel Klatt Show, the analyst previewed 10 games over the course of the rest of the season that will define the College Football Playoff picture. In breaking down the Sooners’ game against Alabama on Nov. 15, Klatt explained why he’s calling Oklahoma a “grenade.”
“Good chance that these 2 teams [Alabama and Oklahoma] have 2 losses, based on their schedules. … Let’s just say hypothetically [John] Mateer’s not totally right and they lose a couple games [before Week 12],” Klatt said. “Well, then, here we go. Now, you’re going to go to Alabama and, at this point, OU is basically the grenade of the SEC.
“If OU is real, they’re just going to start eliminating teams — Texas, maybe Tennessee, maybe Alabama at this point, maybe Missouri later in the year, maybe LSU,” Klatt continued. “But if they just start splitting all those games and they go 3-3 and they finish as a 9-3 [team], they could be knocking themselves and everybody else out. OU is kind of a linchpin team for the College Football Playoff the rest of the way.”
Klatt believes the game is important for Alabama, too.
“This one is really important, I think, this Alabama game,” Klatt said. “Because Alabama, they could be fighting for their Playoff lives at this point, and we might be watching an elimination game.”
It will be interesting to see how the rest of the season unfolds for the Sooners with a loaded slate ahead. At DraftKings, OU is +100 to make the CFP.
