The second-ever 12-team College Football Playoff is set to kick off this weekend, and the inclusion of 2 Group of 5 programs into the big dance this year has been the topic of some intense debate over the past week.
While many believe that both Tulane and James Madison earned their spots in the CFP and deserve a shot to make a run, others believe that their inclusion only serves to water down the tournament.
FOX Sports analyst Joel Klatt is in the second group, and he recently sounded off on Group of 5 teams being included in the CFP by taking a shot at the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.
“The NCAA basketball tournament is a joke,” Klatt said on The Next Round podcast. “It’s the dumbest tournament, and the least fair tournament in all of sports… We’re not looking for a Cinderella. Nobody cares about that in football; we want the best team’s playing against each other at the end.”
Klatt is certainly going to ruffle a few feathers with his take on March Madness, but his larger point about the Group of 5 being included in the current CFP format is a very real debate in the current college football discourse.
Whether or not the decision makers at the top of the sport decide for or against the inclusion of teams like Tulane and James Madison moving forward remains to be seen, but both squads have an opportunity to prove both Klatt and a lot of other naysayers wrong starting this weekend.
