Joey Halzle is proud of the strides Joe Milton has made as a quarterback this season for Tennessee. No. 19 Tennessee is off to a 4-1 start heading into the contest against visiting Texas A&M largely because of the reliability of the senior quarterback.

During a recent press conference, the Tennessee offensive coordinator describes how Milton is an excellent leader.

“He’s been a great calming force for us as we go through games. He’s always right in the middle. Doesn’t get too high. Doesn’t get too low,” Halzle said. “He’s done a great job because we’ve had to get a lot of people out of being that calming center force that kept us going throughout the game.”

Milton has passed for 1,164 yards, 9 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. Tennessee’s last contest, a 41-20 victory vs. South Carolina, was the first uneven showing of the season for Milton. In that game, Milton threw 2 interceptions.

“He’s done a really good job of managing the game. Hasn’t put the ball in a ton of precarious situations. We had a couple the last week, which was really the first time,” Halzle said. “But he’s done a really good job of running the offense. Not just trying to go out there and be an athlete with a big arm. But running the offense at a really high level.”

Halzle beams about the transformation from when Milton transferred to Tennessee to his 3rd season with the Vols.

“What we’ve asked him to do, he’s done really well,” Halzle said. “It’s been good to watch him morph from just a talented player into a true quarterback.”
