Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer is expected to be out for multiple weeks due to an injury to his throwing hand, the program announced on Tuesday afternoon.
That’s problematic for Oklahoma, as the Sooners are less than 3 weeks away from facing Texas in the Red River Rivalry. However, according to On3’s Pete Nakos, there’s “some hope” Mateer could be healthy in time to face the Longhorns.
“The recovery process will be critical,” Nakos added.
Mateer sustained the injury in the first quarter of last weekend’s victory against Auburn, per multiple reports.
Mateer has passed for 1,215 yards, 6 touchdowns and 3 interceptions while also tallying 190 yards and 5 scores on the ground. Sophomore Michael Hawkins Jr. will be Oklahoma’s quarterback in the meantime, beginning with the home game vs. Kent State out of the bye week.
Hawkins is in his true sophomore season with the Sooners. He threw 120 passes last year for Oklahoma while mostly serving as Jackson Arnold’s backup. However, Hawkins did take over as OU’s starter midway through the year and led Oklahoma to a road win over Auburn in SEC play.
Kent State vs. Oklahoma is set for Oct. 4 at 4 p.m. ET (SEC Network).
