Jordan Rodgers calls LSU’s Garrett Nussmeier the best QB in the country

By no means was Garrett Nussmeier prolific in LSU‘s season-opening victory against No. 4 Clemson. The senior signal-caller posted 232 yards and 1 passing touchdown in the winning effort. Despite his relatively modest numbers, SEC Network analyst Jordan Rodgers now believes he’s atop college football’s quarterback hierarchy.

Rodgers made his claim during Wednesday’s episode of Get Up. His high regard for Nussmeier comes from the way he operated the offense in Clemson’s raucous road environment.

“I saw the best quarterback in the country. The most NFL-ready quarterback because of what he did at the line of scrimmage,” Rodgers said. “He controlled the line of scrimmage. He adjusted protections [and] changed plays… he was brilliant under pressure: 5-of-6 for 52 yards, 4 first downs, only one sack. And most of all, he protected the football. That was his Achilles heel last year.”

Nussmeier had four multi-interception games and threw an SEC-high 12 interceptions in 2024. He may not have lit up the stat sheet, but he consistently took what was available to him. In the process, he still managed to flash the traits that have made him a first-round NFL Draft prospect.

“He has elite arm talent [and] elite anticipation, which you saw on full display,” Rodgers said. “It was probably a B-minus game from him… and he got it done. So that bodes well.”

Nussmeier’s approach allowed LSU to dominate time of possession against Clemson (37:10 to 22:50) and grind out what could be the most impressive win on any College Football Playoff resume come late November. There will be times when LSU needs more from his right arm, but proving the offense can play complementary football gives the Tigers a path to victory that they lacked a season ago. We’ll see if they have to go that route again when they host No. 13 Florida (Sept. 13) after battling Louisiana Tech on Saturday.
