Josh Heupel reveals timeline for naming backup QB

The Tennessee Volunteers quarterback situation has been the subject of a good amount of publicity this offseason, as the departure of former five-star Nico Iamaleava over NIL disputes with the program sent shockwaves through the sport.
The split between the two sides led to fifth-year head coach Josh Heupel hitting the transfer portal in search of a new QB1, and he found just that in former App State Mountaineers signal-caller Joey Aguilar, who last week was named the official starter for the Vols ahead of their Week 1 matchup against the Syracuse Orange.
While Tennessee may have found its starter under center, the battle for who will serve as Aguilar’s backup is still far from settled, with Heupel keeping the current state of the battle under wraps.
“You guys will find out on Saturday when the depth chart comes out,” Heupul told reporters on Monday when asked who his backup quarterback will be.
Coaches keeping a tight lid on these sorts of contests in fall camp is nothing new, but it is still interesting to hear that the Vols have yet to figure out who Aguilar’s backup will be.
As such, it will be worth watching when the official depth chart is revealed, and which other promising young gunslinger gets the nod.
