The Alabama Crimson Tide will enter the 2025 season with a brand new quarterback under center for the first time since the 2023 campaign, as the team officially named junior Ty Simpson as their starter last week.

The move came as little surprise, seeing as how Simpson had been serving as Jalen Milroe’s backup for the past couple of seasons.

Now that Simpson has officially secured the top job for the Tide, however, everybody’s attention has now turned to who will be serving as his primary backup once the season kicks off next Saturday against the Florida State Seminoles.

Head coach Kalen DeBoer certainly has a couple of talented names to choose from between Austin Mack and Keelon Russell, but declined to give any update on who the No. 2 man on the depth chart under center could be on Thursday when speaking to reporters.

“We won’t really get into that,” Deboer said when asked if he had decided on a backup. “As far as who’s the second, these guys are just going to keep competing, and you know that’s for every position. Right now there’s balance between the reps, but there’s certainly coordination on who’s getting those reps as well.”

An official decision likely won’t be made public until the first depth chart is released before the Tide’s week one matchup against the Seminoles, but it will be very interesting to see who is able to edge the rest of the QB room out and ends up being named Simpson’s backup.
