One of the biggest blows the Alabama Crimson Tide suffered during their week 1 loss to the Florida State Seminoles was when star sophomore wideout Ryan Williams was knocked out of the game in the fourth quarter after taking a nasty hit.
Williams had been getting hit hard all game long, but this blow in the fourth quarter was the worst of them, as the team announced after the game that the hit actually ended up giving Williams a concussion.
The Tides’ star receiver was able to walk off the field under his own power, but he was still visibly shaken up, which led many to wonder about whether or not he would be available for Bama’s week 2 matchup against Louisiana-Monroe.
On Wednesday’s SEC coaches teleconference, Kalen DeBoer was asked about Williams’ status heading into the game. DeBoer said that Williams was still in the concussion protocol, but that he is also “coming along nicely.”
DeBoer also added that Williams has been on the practice field this week, but is also still considered day-to-day. As such, it’s unlikely that any official decision on his availability will be made before Friday.
The Tide will more than likely be fine without Williams against ULM should he be forced to miss the game, but Bama would certainly still like to have him on the field if he can play.
It will be interesting to see what Williams’ availability ends up being come game time, and what his workload looks like if he is allowed to suit up.
