Injury reports out of fall camp practices worry every college football fanbase. Georgia got a scare on Saturday as 5-star freshman linebacker Raylen Wilson injured his knee during the team’s scrimmage.
In his post-scrimmage press conference, Smart was asked about Wilson’s status. The head coach shared that athletic trainer Ron Courson is optimistic after an initial evaluation.
“Raylen had a hyperextended knee, but as of right now – I would reserve judgment until we know for sure – the ligaments are intact, and hopefully he’ll be fine,” Smart told reporters. “It was a scary play, but he seems to be fine. He walked off the field on his own, and Ron feels good about it. But you never know, you’ve got to do your due diligence.”
Smart added that Wilson was the only player to suffer a significant injury in Saturday’s scrimmage.
UGA defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach Glenn Schumann recently praised Wilson and fellow freshmen CJ Allen and Tory Bowles.
“They’re very talented in terms of their athleticism, in terms of being versatile in their skillset. They’re not limited to doing one thing. That’s what attracted me to them when I watched the tape,” Schumann said Saturday. “Speed is a premium. Ability to play in space is a premium. What really made me want to sign those individuals and why I’m happy they’re here is they’re extremely competitive, extremely hard-working, they love football, and they’re good people. If you check those four in addition to your skillset, those are guys you want to coach.”
