Kirk Herbstreit reacts to news of Charlie Weis Jr.’s return to Ole Miss for Playoff run
Kirk Herbstreit was thrilled to hear that Charlie Weis Jr. is going to coach the Ole Miss offense in the College Football Playoff after all, and he hopes the Rebels get the benefit of the doubt because of it.
With Ole Miss’s Playoff ranking up in the air heading into Tuesday night’s rankings reveal in the aftermath of Lane Kiffin taking the LSU job, the ESPN college football analyst hopes that the Rebels are treated well rankings-wise. Herbstreit believes that Weis’s decision to stay as Ole Miss offensive coordinator for the Playoff before then joining Kiffin’s staff at LSU for the 2026 season should be taken into account by the Playoff committee when deciding the Rebels’ ranking.
“This is GREAT news! Glad this worked out and hope the committee takes this into consideration with Ole Miss,” Herbstreit wrote on his social media account on Tuesday afternoon, a few hours before the CFP rankings show on ESPN.
Herbstreit added that Weis Jr. has been a “critical component” for Ole Miss’s game prep this season, helping the Rebels achieve a historic 11-1 regular season.
After Ole Miss announced that Weis Jr. was coming back to coach in the Playoff, Kiffin released a statement that LSU had “allowed” Weis to return to Oxford for the Playoff.
Kiffin said he wanted Ole Miss to receive the “highest ranking possible” from the Playoff committee.
