Lane Kiffin has been pleased with how Ole Miss has looked this spring, as he noted at a Tuesday press conference that competition has been good for the Rebels, along with energy and a good attitude.
About the quarterbacks, Kiffin said, “Without getting into too much depth probably, Jaxson (Dart) has made more plays down the field, but he’s made more mistakes, too. Kind of big little where Luke (Altmyer) has been a little more consistent that way. Probably what would happen knowing one guy’s been in the system longer. So, we’ll see.”
Quinshon Judkins, a running back, and Davison Igbinosun, a cornerback, are impressing early in their careers, and
Kiffin said he could see both players contributing early. Both played with first unit during Saturday’s scrimmage.
“I think both of those guys have come in with a unique mindset. They don’t seem like…Remember these guys are really high school seniors. They don’t seem that way,” Kiffin said. “Whenever you recruit guys, you see how they are as players, but you’re not really sure how they’re going to be maturity-wise once they get here. They’ve done a good job learning things and are going in there and playing with the ones.”
USC transfer tight end Michal Trigg, who is listed at 6-foot-3 and 240 pounds is also turning heads in what’s been described as “grown man catches.” Kiffin described it as Trigg playing against simply smaller opponents.
“It’s kind of like when the older guys play with the younger guys and there’s the guy in high school playing with the junior high kids, that’s kind of how he plays,” Kiffin said. “Not necessarily faster and quicker than everybody, but his ball control and his length looks like…even though he’s younger than him, because he’s a freshman, it looks like he’s older than them playing with younger guys. It’s very unique.”
On the defensive line, Ole Miss added JJ Pegues (Auburn), Jared Ivey (Georgia Tech) and Khari Coleman (TCU), and Kiffin said the Rebels are getting close to where they want to be.
“I think it’s no secret we haven’t felt like there’s been a lot of quality players in the front where we could rotate and play guys…I think we’re on that way with a lot of different transfers…Hopefully we’ll be deeper,” he said.
