Late Clemson touchdown in national title game proved very costly to bettors
Talk about a bad beat.
It may have seemed inconsequential at the end of Monday night’s national championship game, but Clemson tight end Jordan Leggett’s 24-yard touchdown reception from Deshaun Watson with 12 seconds left costed some people a lot of money.
Alabama, which was favored by 6.5 points when the game kicked off according to Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook, looked like it would cover before Leggett’s touchdown led to the final score of 45-40.
Anyone who took the Crimson Tide to cover the spread instantly went into the fetal position, while everyone who bet on Clemson to cover was jumping for joy.
So just how much of an impact did that one little touchdown make? According to ESPN’s Darren Rovell, approximately $10 million.
Wynn sports book director Johnny Avello estimates $10 MILLION changed hands in Vegas on back door cover Clemson TD.

You can’t blame the people who picked Alabama to cover. After all, the Tide had won its previous three national championship matchups by an average margin of 21.7 points.
