When the LSU Tigers kick off their summer workouts, they’ll do so without 4-star 2017 DT Tyler Shelvin.

The No. 4 defensive tackle in the class of 2017 and No. 1 overall recruit from Louisiana, per 247Sports, has to get his academics in order before he can join the Tigers on the gridiron.

Though Shelvin will have to complete summer school, LSU coach Ed Orgeron told The Advocate that he expects the big defensive tackle to be ready when the fall semester begins:

“He’s got some work to do. I feel like he will be,” he said.

Even with the setback, Coach O said he still anticipates Shelvin making an impact for the team this fall:

“He is a very explosive young man. I expect him to help us this year,” Orgeron said earlier this week. “He’s at nose (guard), but he can play tackle. He has similar qualities to (former LSU star DT Glenn) Dorsey.”

Only time will tell if Shelvin is able to get up to speed in order to contribute as a freshman, but first things first — he has to take care of business in the classroom.
