With running backs like Leonard Fournette and Derrius Guice, you’d think LSU’s play-action passing game would be among the best in the nation.
But the Tigers are only just starting to realize their potential in that area.

ESPN’s David Ching tweeted a chart of how well LSU has performed on play-action passes in the last four seasons, and the Tigers are performing better than ever since coach Les Miles and offensive coordinator Cam Cameron were fired Sept. 25.
During the two games under interim coach Ed Orgeron and new offensive coordinator Steven Ensminger, LSU’s QBR is the best it has ever been during that stretch. The only other season with a comparable QBR on play-action passes was in 2013, when the Tigers’ offense featured future NFL players in quarterback Zach Mettenberger and receivers Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry.
Play-action has made LSU’s offense more explosive and helped Danny Etling adjust to the starting quarterback role. We’ll see how often the No. 25 Tigers use that wrinkle when they host No. 23 Ole Miss at 9 p.m. ET Saturday on ESPN.
