It’s safe to say Miami head coach Mario Cristobal won’t be claiming “The U is back,” anytime soon.
The Miami native recently shared with On3’s JD Pickell that he “cringes” when he hears fans and media say that phrase.
“‘The U is back.’ I cringe at that all the time. It just drives me banana s… I like to think in terms of Miami, or I like to say UM, because back when I played it was UM, is here,” Cristobal said. “We have activated the most rabid, insane fan base you can imagine. And also one that really galvanizes … I think it really hit hard when we came out of the tunnel at the Cotton Bowl against Ohio State, and that place was just going bananas and was filled up with orange and green all over the place.”
When Cristobal became the head coach at Miami, they were coming off a 7-5 season in which they were ranked No. 14 in the preseason AP poll. Since Cristobal has taken over, he has led Miami to 2 double-digit win seasons and taken them to the College Football Playoff National Championship.
In Cristobal’s words, the UM is officially here.
