Matt Leinart explains Jayden Daniels’ path to the Heisman Trophy

Matt Leinart knows what it takes to win the Heisman Trophy. That’s why his ringing endorsement of LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels for the top individual prize in college football is so meaningful.
The former USC quarterback captured the award in 2004 en route to a national title that has since been vacated. Leinart believes Daniels has a real shot at the award if LSU can knock off Alabama this weekend and win out the remainder of their games.
Leinart also thinks the senior is having a season comparable to Joe Burrow’s 2019 Heisman campaign for LSU.
“I think Jayden Daniels might be my frontrunner,” Leinart said on the latest episode of The Saturday Down South Podcast. “And I know they have 2 losses and they have a big one this weekend, and I think they have to win out. But the pace that he’s on, you go back to Joe Burrow’s year a few years ago — it was one of the best statistical years, one of the best offenses we’ve ever seen — Jayden Daniels is right there on par. He’s on pace with Burrow with his numbers. I think he might get it.”
Daniels has passed for 2,573 yards, 25 touchdowns and 3 interceptions while ranking No. 2 nationally in QBR (91.8).
If Daniels can put up a big performance against an impressive Alabama defense, it could serve as the springboard to solidifying his resume.
LSU at Alabama is set for 7:45 p.m. EST (CBS).
