The Nebraska Cornhuskers have seen a pretty remarkable turnaround over the past couple of seasons under the stewardship of third-year head coach Matt Rhule, currently holding a 6-2 record and reaching bowl eligibility for the second straight year.

After spending the past 20 years or so trying to regain the prestige they built up in the 80s and 90s, the Cornhuskers finally look like they are on pace to get back into the upper echelons of the sport, and Rhule has been the primary reason for their resurgence.

It looks like the head ball coach for Nebraska will be sticking around for the long haul as well, as ESPN insider Pete Thamel is reporting that Rhule and the Cornhuskers have agreed on a 2-year contract extension that will keep him in Lincoln through 2032.

The most significant part of this extension is the $15 million buyout now included for any team that wishes to poach Rhule away from Nebraska, a figure that Thamel says essentially eliminates him from any job openings in this year’s coaching carousel.

Given how many high-profile jobs have already become available, and how many others could end up becoming available by season’s end, this was the most prudent thing for the university to do to keep their guy locked in at Nebraska.
