Tragedy struck Mississippi State’s football program earlier in the week when offensive lineman Samuel Westmoreland died at the age of 18.

There have been several tributes for Westmoreland from the football program and his teammates over the past week, but one of the more poignant tributes came from freshman group of offensive linemen at Mississippi State, who honored Westmoreland on the day he would have turned 19.

Tributes to Westmoreland came from other athletic programs at the school as well. Last night the Bulldogs women’s volleyball team had Westmoreland’s #78 written on their wrist tape.

Mississippi State head football coach Mike Leach has not been made available to the media this week, but he made practice optional the day after Westmoreland died and suggested to players to speak to the school’s mental health counselors if they needed to.
