Mizzou QB Sam Horn exits first quarter of season-opener with an injury
Sam Horn had to be helped off the field in the first quarter of Thursday night’s opener against Central Arkansas after appearing to injure his leg.
Horn, who is battling Beau Pribula for the starting quarterback job at Mizzou, ran a quarterback keeper on his first play of the game. After a 6-yard gain, Horn was upended by a Central Arkansas defender. He initially stood up on his own power, but quickly went back down to the field and was immediately tended to by trainers.
As he was helped off the field, Horn had a noticeable limp and struggled to put weight on his right leg. He went straight to the team’s medical tent on the sideline.
According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s Eli Hoff, Horn left the injury tent later without his helmet and was taken back to the team’s locker room.
The 6-foot-4 Horn is a redshirt junior from Lawrenceville, Georgia. He did not play in a game last season while rehabbing an injury. Horn played in 3 games in 2023 and 1 game in 2022.
Despite the lack of experience, Horn was very much in the running to be Mizzou’s starting quarterback. He battled Penn State transfer Beau Pribula throughout spring and fall camp, with head coach Eli Drinkwitz opting to extend the battle into the Week 1 opener.
Drinkwitz wanted to see how both players would look in a live game setting. Unfortunately for the Tigers’ head coach, he might have to wait a bit longer to see Horn.
It’s unclear if Horn will return to Thursday night’s game. Pribula, who threw a 51-yard touchdown on his first pass attempt, will lead the offense in the interim. The Tigers held a 9-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
