Monte Kiffin on Lane leaving Tennessee for USC: ‘We never should have left here’

Monte Kiffin was on hand for his son Lane’s return to Rocky Top on Saturday night.

The 82-year-old former coach watched as Lane’s Ole Miss squad held on for a dramatic 31-26 victory over Tennessee in a packed (and rowdy) Neyland Stadium.

It was an intense atmosphere, as we all know Lane coached Tennessee in 2009 before leaving after 1 season to take the USC job.

Speaking with ESPN’s Chris Low, Monte said he understood that his son couldn’t say no to USC, but added that he thinks they should have never left Knoxville:

“I still say we never should have left here. So many good people and a great place to live, but Lane just couldn’t say no to USC.”

Obviously, the USC tenure didn’t work out for Lane. Now he has found a good spot at Ole Miss. But, with his name connected to the LSU opening, will the Kiffin family be on the move again?
