National title game delivers ESPN 3rd-highest overnight rating ever for a game
Last week, it had been reported that ESPN had been hit hard by the lack of viewership for the College Football Playoff semifinals.
However, ESPN’s Megacast presentation of Monday night’s national championship saw a 16.0 overnight rating. That number refers to the airing of the game on ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPNU. Nonetheless, the 16.0 overnight rating is ESPN’s third-best overnight for any single game across all sports.
The traditional telecast on ESPN earned a 15.8 overnight rating.
ESPN has broadcasted six college football national championships, and Alabama’s 45-40 win over Clemson drew a higher overnight result than all but last year’s national championship and the very first title game the network broadcasted in 2010.
Not surprisingly, Birmingham was the No. 1 local market, earning a 59.2 overnight.
