Between opt outs and transfers, football teams need some roster flexibility during bowl season, and the NCAA has arrived with some relief. Cole Cubelic first reported the news.
The NCAA has issued a one-time blanket waiver, on the FBS level, to exempt postseason participation from the limit of 4 contests a student-athlete may participate in without using a season of competition. The blanket waiver is applicable to FBS postseason games that are played after Dec. 15.
This will come in handy for programs who have promising young players who may need to fill roles to finish the season.
There are several teams facing double-digit departures ahead of their bowl game.
In the SEC, for example, this could help Luke Doty, who is the Gamecocks’ backup QB who has played in 4 games. If South Carolina’s staff wanted to play him they can against Notre Dame without burning his year of eligibility. For Georgia, players who fit into this situation include AD Mitchell, Arik Gilbert, E.J. Lightsey and Julian Humphrey.
