Fans between the hedges were stunned yesterday when edge defender LaDamion Guyton, the top player from the state of Georgia in the 2027 recruiting class, spurned the hometown Bulldogs for the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Georgia was viewed by some as a favorite to land his commitment. Fans and analysts alike were left perplexed in the aftermath of the announcement. One day later, we have a good idea why Guyton is headed to Lubbock.

On Friday morning, On3’s Pete Nakos reported that Guyton is expected to make $900,000 during his freshman year at Texas Tech. The hefty payday likely played a big role in Guyton’s decision to join the Red Raiders.

Guyton, a 6-foot-3, 225-pound high school junior, is certainly being paid like a star. But how does his financial package compare to others? South Carolina edge defender Dylan Stewart — a former 5-star recruit in the 2024 class who posted 6.5 sacks and 11 tackles for loss as a freshman last year —was rewarded with an NIL package that will reportedly pay him between $1 million and $1.5 million during the 2025 season.

It definitely hurts to see someone as talented as Guyton leave the Peach State for financially greener pastures. However, we’ve seen that spending big in Texas doesn’t necessarily equate to winning (here’s to you, Texas A&M). It’s possible that Texas Tech ascends by the time Guyton reaches campus. But as long as Kirby Smart doesn’t let this start a trend, Georgia isn’t going anywhere.
