Tuesday’s devastating news of unarmed Walter Scott being gunned down by a police officer in South Carolina over the weekend has hit close to home in the SEC.

Ole Miss defensive lineman Fadol Brown, a Charleston, S.C., native, tweeted late Tuesday night that the 50-year-old Scott was his stepfather:

Michael Slager, an officer with the North Charleston Police Department, was arrested Tuesday and charged with murder after an on-site video released nationwide revealed he shot Scott eight times in the back. If convicted, Slager could face life in prison or the death penalty in South Carolina.

Brown, a junior with the Rebels, transferred to Ole Miss from Florida International in 2013 and recorded 38 tackles in nine starts last fall.

Many Ole Miss and SEC fans alike expressed their condolences to Brown shortly after his tweet.
