Eight days after Ole Miss downed arch rival Mississippi State, Ole Miss was awarded its first top 10 finish in the final regular season Associated Press Top 25 since 1969.

Hugh Freeze’s team comes in at No. 9 in the Week 16 AP poll. Mississippi State sits just above the Rebels at No. 8, with Georgia Tech behind Ole Miss at No. 10.

Ole Miss has not finished a regular season in the top 10 since 1969, when John Vaught led the Rebels to an 8-3 mark and a Sugar Bowl win.

The Rebels finished 9-3, with the win over the Bulldogs vaulting Ole Miss back into the top 10 and the conversation for a New Year’s Six bowl berth.

Ole Miss cemented itself as a legitimate contender in the SEC West with an Oct. 4 victory over Alabama in Oxford with ESPN’s “College GameDay” in town. The 7-0 start is the best in school history.

However, injuries at key positions decimated the Rebels down the stretch. Ole Miss lost three of its final five games down the stretch, but bounced back with an impressive performance in the 111th Egg Bowl
