Ole Miss OC Phil Longo reportedly interviews for head coaching position at Texas State
Matt Luke may not even get a chance to decide if he wants his offensive coordinator to return to Oxford next season.
According to a new report, Phil Longo has interviewed for the head coaching position at Texas State.
The Ole Miss head coach was twice asked about the status of Phil Longo during his latest media availability and acknowledged that his offensive coordinator was fielding calls to become a head coach. The Rebels are coming off a season in which they rank No. 12 in S&P+ offensive efficiency rankings. The team also ranks in the top 10 in scoring offense in the nation.
Here’s what Luke had to say about the status of Longo in Oxford heading into the offseason.
“When you have back-to-back top 10 offenses, the coordinators are going to get looks and he is getting looks,” Luke said on Tuesday. “I think that’s natural when you have really good offenses. You have coordinators interviewing for head jobs.”
Well, it appears we know of at least one school interested in potentially hiring Longo.
According to Keff Ciardello, a Texas State writer for the Austin American-Statesman, Longo has interviewed for the job but is not currently considered to be the frontrunner. Everett Withers held the position this season after being dismissed 10 days ago after leading the program to a 3-8 record.
Longo has been in Oxford for two seasons, after being hired by Hugh Freeze from Sam Houston State.
Good source telling me that three coaches interviewed for #TXST vacancy on Sunday: #HOU OC Kendel Briles, #OleMiss OC Phil Longo and #WVU OC Jake Spavital. Hearing Briles is the front runner.
