The New England Patriots did not have a first-round pick to use in the 2016 NFL Draft thanks to the penalties handed down the league in the Deflategate fiasco, thus Cyrus Jones was the team’s first available selection in the latest draft. Judging by his performance in a recent scrimmage against the Saints, his draft slot may not indicate the caliber of player Jones could be in Year 1 in the NFL.

According to Doug Kyed of the New England Sports Network Jones stood out during the Tuesday scrimmage and had his best performance of the preseason for the Patriots. Jones even handled his duties as punt returner flawless – something that he struggled with at times during his career with Crimson Tide.

Going up against fellow second-round pick Michael Thomas, from Ohio State, Jones consistently shut down the rookie receiver during the scrimmage – holding the Buckeye without a catch on the day.

If Jones can get up his level of production in New England, expect the rookie to start at the nickelback position during his first season with the club.
