Report: National title run nets Alabama assistants plenty of bonus money
Nothing beats winning a national championship. A little extra dough doesn’t hurt though.
Alabama’s nine assistants who were on the field for Monday night’s 45-40 win over Clemson in the national title game earned a little less than $1.1 million in performance bonuses for the team’s 14-1 campaign, according to USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz.
The biggest bonuses went to defensive coordinator Kirby Smart ($250,000) and offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin ($150,000). Meanwhile, strength coach Scott Cochran also earned a cool $92,400.
A story by USAToday.com’s Nate Scott breaks down the details of the bonuses. For making the SEC title game, the assistants got a four percent bonus. Meanwhile, a “bowl bonus” was also given, which is dependent on the game. In this case, since they won the national title, they received an 18 percent bonus.
Scott goes on to mention that might not be all. The assistants may be awarded more from the head coach’s discretionary pool.
