Whipple went 16-44 in his second stint with FBS Independent UMass, which lasted five years and began in 2014 with the school still part of the MAC. He first coached the program from 1998-2003 when it was a part of Division I-AA, leading the Minutemen to a national title on that level in his first season.
Whipple is the eighth FBS coach to be fired this season, following Mike Jinks (Bowling Green), D.J. Durkin (Maryland), David Beaty (Kansas), Bobby Petrino (Louisville), Mike MacIntyre (Colorado), Brad Lambert (Charlotte) and Everett Withers (Texas State).
