Sam Pittman and Arkansas are getting set for the Liberty Bowl against Kansas, and with Barry Odom off to UNLV, the Razorbacks need a new defensive play caller.

Pittman on Friday said linebackers coach Michael Scherer will call Arkansas’ defense in the bowl game. Pittman added that they hope to retain Scherer as the linebackers coach and as of Friday morning, Scherer hadn’t talked to Odom about a job at UNLV.

About Arkansas’ defensive coordinator opening, Pittman said the Razorbacks are closing in on a new DC, but he doesn’t know when he wants to announce it.

Retaining Scherer would be significant for Arkansas after Bruce Feldman of FOX Sports and The Athletic reported that Odom would try to bring Scherer with him. Scherer was a Missouri linebacker when Odom coached the Tigers, and then hired him for the job at Arkansas.

Pittman said offensive lineman Jalen St. John is still suspended indefinitely, and he also added that defensive lineman Taurean Carter will not play in the Liberty Bowl.
