Shane Beamer has made a decision regarding South Carolina’s starting quarterback for this fall.

Beamer named LaNorris Sellers the starter on Tuesday afternoon while speaking with reporters. He beat out Robby Ashford and Davis Beville for the starting job.

Sellers was widely expected to win this job. Beamers told reporters in the spring that Sellers would enter the summer as the team’s starter.

Sellers primarily served as backup to Spencer Rattler last season as a true freshman, but he did get a little bit of game time. He recorded 5 rushing attempts spread across 3 games but did not attempt a pass in 2023. His lone TD of the season came on a 36-yard scamper against Vanderbilt in November of last season.

Sellers was a highly-rated prospect coming out of the high school ranks. He was a 4-star recruit in the class of 2023. He was ranked as the No. 249 overall player and the No. 17 quarterback in the country for that cycle, per 247Sports Composite rankings. He’s also a South Carolina native — Sellers attended South Florence High School.

This is an important season for South Carolina as the Gamecocks look to re-establish some of the momentum that was gained in Beamer’s first 2 seasons at the helm. In 2023, South Carolina slipped to 5-7 and missed out on bowl eligibility.

Sellers will make his debut as South Carolina’s starter on Aug. 31 against Old Dominion. Kickoff is set for 4:15 p.m. ET.
