With big shoes to fill on the defensive line, Georgia is counting on DL Trent Thompson to anchor the unit.

Following Sunday’s scrimmage, UGA coach Kirby Smart talked about what he’s seen from Thompson so far, per Jason Butt of The Telegraph (Macon, Ga.).

“Well, I saw good and bad. I told Trent he’s got to improve his body language,” Smart said. “Sometimes he looks like he’s not into it. But if you light a little fire under him, he makes some plays. He’s done that some. Trent’s gotta play better technique and get his hands better, and play with better toughness.”

Thompson joined Georgia as the No. 1 overall prospect of the 2015 recruiting class. He started in six games last season and logged 25 total tackles, including 2.5 tackles for loss.

While there’s always room for improvement, Smart gushed about Thompson’s potential.

“I know the sky’s the limit for Trent and he hasn’t reached his potential,” Smart said. “We’ve got to challenge him to do that. If we’re going to be great, he’s got to be great.”
