South Carolina received great news on Thursday, as the school announced that freshman defensive lineman Josh Belk has been ruled eligible by the NCAA to play this season.
Belk enrolled at Clemson for the spring semester in 2018, before transferring to South Carolina earlier this summer.
“Obviously, we are very happy to get the news from the NCAA that Josh is eligible to play this season,” Gamecocks coach Will Muschamp said in a press release. “Our compliance department did a great job of making a strong case for Josh and the NCAA did the right thing in granting the waiver. I’m appreciative for everyone involved in making this happen.”
Belk, a graduate of Lewisville (S.C.) High School, was a 4-star recruit per the 247sports composite rankings. He was the No. 2 recruit from South Carolina in the 2018 class and the No. 7 defensive tackle.
During the SEC Coaches’ Teleconference on Wednesday, Muschamp had stated that he had hoped to learn about the status of Belk this week, but he hadn’t heard anything. About 24 hours later, the South Carolina coach has received the news he was hoping for.
The Gamecocks open the season against Coastal Carolina on Saturday at 12 p.m. ET.
