South Carolina will be without one of its top defensive players against Georgia.
ESPN preseason All-American nickelback Cam Smith won’t play against Georgia Saturday, according to ESPN’s Jordan Reid.
“South Carolina CB Cam Smith will not play today vs. Georgia. He suffered a concussion last week vs. Arkansas, per sources. A major loss for the Gamecocks defense,” ESPN’s Jordan Reid said on Twitter.
Smith suffered what Shane Beamer called an “upper body injury” last week in South Carolina’s loss to Arkansas. Backup nickelback David Spaulding also enters Saturday as questionable. Smith was a second-team All-SEC player in 2021, leading the team with 14 passes defended and allowing only 15 catches on 32 targets.
This is obviously a huge loss for the Gamecocks already-thin defense. Stetson Bennett and company will also be without AD Mitchell at wide receiver and Arik Gilbert at tight end.
South Carolina kicks off against Georgia at noon eastern on ESPN.
