Stanford to hire former NFL head coach on 1-year interim basis, per report

Stanford recently fired head coach Troy Taylor after only 2 seasons at the helm of the Cardinal program. Newly hired Stanford GM Andrew Luck made the decision amid ongoing investigations into Taylor’s alleged conduct with female staffers.
Instead of making a quick decision on who to turn the program over to on a long-term basis, the Cardinal will reportedly go with a 1-year interim coach for the 2025 football season.
Per a report from ESPN insider Pete Thamel, Stanford will hire former NFL head coach Frank Reich to lead the Cardinal in 2025. Both sides are in agreement that this setup will only be for 1 year before Stanford undergoes a national search for its new head coach:
Luck and Reich are familiar with one another, as the former Colts star QB’s final season (2018) was Reich’s first year as the head coach in Indianapolis.
Reich was most recently the head coach of the Carolina Panthers in 2023 before he was fired after only 1 season at the helm of the team. He has never coached in the college ranks.
Who will the Cardinal hire on a more permanent basis for 2026 and beyond? That remains to be seen, but it appears Luck wants to take his time with that decision.
