Study: Quartet of SEC athletic departments stand out in supporting academics
Four SEC schools can thank their athletic departments for their distinguished efforts in giving back to academics.
According to The Chronicle of Higher Education’s Brad Wolverton and Sandhya Kambhamptai, Alabama, Florida, Kentucky and LSU make up four of the 10 institutions in which more money was given back to academic programs than the subsidies that went into athletics between 2011 and 2014.
The NCAA has only been keeping record of those expenses since 2011. According to the study, there have been 40-plus athletic programs that have given monetary support to their campuses for academic reasons over that four-year time span.
The other schools rounding out the top 10 were Michigan, Nebraska, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Purdue and Texas.
