When Tennessee coach Butch Jones said the Volunteers’ 2016 senior class members were “Champions of Life” on Monday, it was widely mocked on the internet.

On Tuesday, senior QB Joshua Dobbs spoke with reporters to set the record straight and defend his coach’s remarks.

In the above video, Dobbs said Jones was trying to say that the experience of playing at Tennessee is greater than any win-loss record:

“Obviously you want to win each and every game, each and every time you step on the field,” he said. “But 10, 15 years from now, you’ll look back on your experience at the University of Tennessee and you’ll look back at the people you affected here and you’re not going to focus on what was the score of the Missouri game in 2016, you’re going to focus on the lives you affected and the bonds you create, how you treat people and how you enjoyed your experience.”

Tennessee still has a chance to make 2016 a special season, though. If the Vols win at Vanderbilt on Saturday, they could be in the mix for a Sugar Bowl berth.
