Tennessee senior C Evan Russell unavailable as Vols begin NCAA Tournament

Surprising news out of Rocky Top as No. 1 Tennessee begins the NCAA Tournament’s Knoxville Regional: Evan Russell is not available.
Wes Rucker of 247Sports shared a UT statement announcing Russell unavailable for Friday’s game against Alabama State, adding that coach Tony Vitello will address the catcher’s status after the game. Charlie Taylor is catching for Tennessee against Alabama State.

Redshirt freshman Charlie Taylor is starting behind the plate.

Tim Owens of WATE shared a worrisome note that he’s hearing it may not be just a one-game issue for Russell.

In 52 games (50 starts) Russell is batting .299 with 13 home runs and 43 RBI. He posts a .996 fielding percentage.
The college baseball community will be interested in what Vitello has to say about Russell after Tennessee’s game against Alabama State.
